Wholesaler Booker announces increase in half-year profits

Food wholesaler Booker Group has reported a 13% rise in total sales to £2.5bn in the 24 weeks to 9 September, with half-year profits before tax up 9.3% to £81m.

It has also achieved a 90.3% 'Recommend' score in an independently conducted Customer Satisfaction survey.

Stuart Hyslop, Managing Director of Booker's group catering and small business division, said: “It's great to see that independent caters have told us that we are making good progress but there's still some more to do. Our people remain our greatest strength and alongside improvements on our price perception and delivery service, it has all combined to help us achieve a recommend score of over 90% for the first time.

“That was always our target and shows our customers think that we're doing a good job. However, there are a couple of slipbacks and we're going to use the next few weeks to understand that fully and improve going into the second half.

“We've just opened our 10th Chef Central site, in Norwich, and collectively those branches are now growing at 10% year on year. We're going to be using Norwich to trial some improvements in the second half. Firstly on choice which centres around providing solutions to caterers who are looking for professional-grade products to use in their businesses. Examples here are disposables and our CleanPro range.

“We've also introduced the 'All About Drinks' book which is about helping our customers to understand how they can make more from their drinks offering. We've also introduced a new premium range of Blackgate Beef. We're also trialling a same-day delivery service and this is in response to our customers asking for help because their business is so unpredictable. We'll be looking to support them with a hyper-responsive service.”
