August sees the return of the Premier League with champions Manchester City and runners-up Liverpool both in action on the opening weekend. It's also a big month for racing with York's Ebor Festival taking place

The knockout cup reaches the showpiece final as the original 52 teams come down to two. Last year saw Catalans Dragons beat Warrington Wolves by 20-14 at Wembley to become the first non- British team to win the cup in its 117-year history. The Dragons will not be returning to defend their title, having been knocked out of the competition back in May when they lost by 51-8 to Hull FC.
