The Swan in West Wickham crowned as Budweiser's 'King of Pubs'
20th July 2018
Budweiser, Official Beer of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™, has announced that The Swan, in West Wickham, has beaten nine other pubs from across the country to win Budweiser’s first ever King of Pubs competition – a national search for the country’s most euphoric pub for watching football.
The competition saw ten pubs and their punters go head-to-head during the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ for the chance to win the coveted title, and Budweiser’s £10,000 Pub Futures grant; helping to secure the future of the winning local for its passionate, football-loving community.
During the competition, Budweiser was on the lookout for venues that showcased the most passionate displays of fan euphoria and energy during 2018 FIFA World Cup™ games, with the Budweiser Accumulator on hand to measure decibels and fan elation levels during the footballing action.
The pubs went up against each other for England’s three group games, as well as the quarter and semi-finals. In the closing and deciding game of the King of Pubs tournament, the two loudest pubs from the contest went head-to-head during the final match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™.
Ten venues took part in the competition, with The Swan crowned as the ultimate winner as it accumulated the most amount of decibels to become the UK’s most euphoric pub, followed closely by The Murderers in Norwich
Budweiser’s Pub Futures grant followed in the footsteps of its ground-breaking FA Club Futures initiative, which offers lower league football clubs grants to improve prospects, as part of its partnership with the FA. Both grant programmes are part of Budweiser’s ambition to support the future of grass-root facilities that bring communities together.
The £10,000 prize for The Swan will be invested into a large new beer garden, which pub manager Neil Howley is pledging as to thank the local community who helped The Swan win the King of Pubs title.
Neil Howley, pub manager of The Swan, says: “I’m absolutely ecstatic about winning Budweiser’s King of Pubs. Throughout the tournament, I’ve seen the whole community come together and it’s encouraged people I’ve never seen before from the local area to come into the pub and enjoy being part of the atmosphere.
“It’s thanks to the locals and the hard work of my staff that we got this far, and I can’t thank them enough! They’ve made the past five weeks exactly what football should all about – community and euphoria.”
Sascha Cordes, Senior Brand Manager at Budweiser, says: “At Budweiser, we recognise that football is more than just a game and that it has the power to bring people together everywhere.
“With England’s dramatic run to the semi-finals, the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ will live long in the memories of fans everywhere. On behalf of everyone at Budweiser, I would like to congratulate The Swan and everyone who made this happen on winning the King of Pubs tournament and I’m looking forward to heading over and having a beer with the locals in the new beer garden.”
Budweiser’s King of Pubs was one of several euphoric moments of celebration designed for football fans throughout the 2018 FIFA World Cup™, which projected the beer brand to become the most talked about brand on Twitter during the tournament.
