Melrose Sevens launches search to find Britain’s best rugby pub

8th March 2018

The world’s oldest rugby sevens tournament has launched a quest – to find Britain’s best rugby pub.

The 128th Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens takes place on the 14th April but rugby fans who aren’t able to travel to the Borders to cheer on the home and international teams will be still be able to savour match day action – thanks to television coverage.

Many will follow the action in bars or pubs, but before they raise a glass to the annual tournament, they’re being called on to nominate their local bar, club or pub for the top title.

Whether it’s the great craft beer, large screens to view big matches, delicious food when the final whistle blows or the clientele that makes for a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, it’s up to pub-going public to state why they think their local deserves the honour.

Britain have an abundance of pubs where people come together to enjoy shared interests including rugby, and often the atmosphere in clubs and bars during big-match screenings can be almost as electrifying as you’d find in a stadium.

That’s why, ahead of the 128th Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens which takes place on the 14th April, the bid has been launched to find Britain’s best rugby pub.

Fans are being urged to take up the challenge by putting forward their local hostelries as contenders.

Douglas Hardie, President of Melrose Rugby said: “Every year over 12,000 people descend on the Borders town of Melrose to see the on-pitch action, but thanks to television coverage from the BBC, the event is beamed out to rugby fans across Britain – and overseas too.

“Just like the Melrose Sevens, there can only be one winner of Britain’s best rugby pub, but we look forward to fans getting behind this one and stating why their local deserves the honour.”

The competition has launched on social media and asks pub goers: “Tell us in one sentence why your local deserves the title Britain’s best Rugby Pub?”

They are encouraged share their comments – and pictures – on Melrose Sevens social media www.facebook.com/melrosevens, or Twitter @melrosevens using the hashtag #toprugbypub

Shortlisted pubs will be announced on March 22 and will then go to the public vote with the winner announced before this year’s Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens. The pub that gains the most votes will receive the coveted title and an inscribed plaque to recognise the achievement.

The Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose Sevens is a great day out for families, couples and rugby fans who enjoy fast and exhilarating sporting action. Tickets for the event start from £10 for children, £15 for senior citizens and £20 for adults. Family tickets are also available for £50, admitting two adults and two children.

Even if you can’t make it to Melrose, you can watch BBC coverage in your local watering hole on through BBC Scotland which is available outside Scotland on Freesat and Sky Channel 970 and Virgin Media Channel 102.
