Aviva Premiership Rugby: Round Five Preview

3rd October 2014

Sports4Bars looks ahead to the three live Aviva Premiership ties showing this weekend, including what should be a fascinating Bath v Saracens showdown

There's plenty of Aviva Premiership action this weekend on BT Sport, starting off with a Friday night clash between Bath and Saracens at the Rec.

The visitors come into this game as the pacesetters in the league, reaching the top of the table courtesy of their 100 per cent record in the first four rounds of the Aviva Premiership.

They will be wary of Bath though, despite the West Country side's 31-24 defeat against Northampton Saints last week, Bath having produced one of the standout performances in the competition so far when they demolished Leicester Tigers 45-0 a fortnight ago.

Saracens will be a far tougher proposition in defence than injury-hit Leicester and will be aiming to shut down any Bath counter-attacks before they can cause any damage, a ploy that will no doubt be helped by Sarries' formidable scrum which should help keep the Bath back row in check for much of the 80 minutes.

Then, on Saturday, Gloucester take on Leicester Tigers in a match that could be too close to call given that both teams are in identical positions in the table with ten points apiece.

Gloucester will have enjoyed their 46-10 win over London Welsh last week and with the Kingsholm faithful cheering them on, will have every confidence of piling more misery on a Tigers side who have lost their last two games.

Admittedly, Tigers have been without some key men in recent weeks but will still be hurting after their humiliation at Bath and their narrow loss against London Irish.

The third live Aviva Premiership tie of the weekend is Sale Sharks v London Wasps at 2pm on Sunday.

Even with a revitalised fly-half Danny Cipriani causing problems for opposition defences in the midfield, Sale Sharks have had a poor start to their league campaign, losing three out of four so far.

But history would certainly appear to be in Sale's favour with the Sharks having having won six out of the last seven encounter against Londond Wasps.

There should be some added spice during proceedings on Sunday with four ex-Sale Sharks players in the Wasps squad in Chris Bell, Kearnan Myall, James Gaskell and Rob Miller.
